This PH Awareness Month

Take the Life in Purple Challenge

Celebrated annually throughout the month of November, PH Awareness Month is an international event that raises awareness of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Every November, people living with PH worldwide, along with their loved ones and care providers, unite to raise awareness of the disease and the need for earlier diagnosis, more effective and accessible treatments, and—ultimately—a cure.

This PH Awareness Month, we challenge you to take the Life in Purple Challenge to help raise #PHAwareness and funds for PHA Canada.

If together we raise a minimum of $3,000 between November 01st and December 31st, our PHriends at McKesson Canada will double our efforts with a matching donation!

Share Your Life in Purple Story

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) has significant emotional, social, and financial impacts on patients and their families.

PH is also often referred to as an “invisible disease,” meaning that those who have it may not look ill.

If you live with PH – or help care for someone who has PH – you know first hand how the disease can impact every aspect of life. Raise #PHAwareness all month by sharing parts of your Life in Purple story. Use the tools below to post stories, comments, photos, and videos about the impact PH has on your life. Share your posts with your networks on social media to help your friends and family better understand what it means to live with PH. Tag your post with #LifeInPurpleChallenge to be included in the national conversation!

Take the Life in Purple Challenge

Part of having an “invisible chronic illness” like pulmonary hypertension is that it can be difficult for people who aren’t directly affected by PH to understand what it means to live with the disease. This PH Awareness Month, PHA Canada challenges supporters across the country to better understand the daily impacts of PH on patients and caregivers.

Challenge someone you know to “walk in the shoes” of a PH patient or caregiver by taking on one of the following Life in Purple Challenges for a set amount of time (e.g. one week, one month, etc.)

Or take the challenge yourself in support of the PHighters you love!

Take the Stairs

Walk in the shoes of someone with PH by challenging yourself to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Take Up New Chores

Get to know what it’s like to be a PH caregiver by taking on new or extra chores around the house.

Donate Your Time

Volunteer some of your time to help someone – whether someone close to you or a complete stranger.

Try Something New

Step out of your comfort zone by trying something new or turning a bad habit into a good one.

Beat Your Record

Improve your fitness by taking up a new physical activity or challenge yourself to beat your own workout record!

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare but very complex and serious lung disease that is progressive and potentially fatal. PH is defined by high blood pressure in the lungs resulting from inflammation or scarring in the pulmonary arteries. If left untreated, PH can lead to enlargement and weakness of the right-side of the heart, a serious type of heart failure.

PH shares a number of its symptoms with other conditions, resulting in many people being misdiagnosed. Without treatment, the average life expectancy of someone with PH is less than three years. Alarmingly, many patients spend more than two years seeking an accurate diagnosis. While there is currently no cure for PH, thanks to available treatments, many patients are living longer, healthier lives.

PHA Canada is a federally registered charity whose mission is to empower the Canadian pulmonary hypertension (PH) community through support, education, advocacy, awareness, and research. PHA Canada was established in 2008 to represent a united Canadian PH community—including patients, caregivers, and health care providers—and to better the lives of all Canadians affected by pulmonary hypertension.
